Brio Build Your Own Brass Switch

Solid brass, 3 mm thick, brushed by hand so the grain runs one way and takes the evening light. Slotted screws in the same finish sit flush with the face. The edge is eased, so a hand sliding along the wall at night finds nothing sharp, just the cool of the metal.

Each position on the plate takes one module. Every module is rated up to 15 A at 110 to 120 V and fits standard US boxes.

• Rotary dimmer, $80. Turn to set the level, press to switch off and on.

Width grows with the gang count. Height stays at 4.7 in, so a run of plates down one hallway lines up.

Have a licensed electrician fit it. The plate mounts to standard US wall boxes, one gang per position, and fixes with the screws already in the box, so there is no drilling. Match the box to the plate size and the rest is a morning's work.

Wipe with a soft dry cloth. No abrasives, no polish. Brass is meant to age with the house.
